Episode 8 | Collision with Larry Pastel

Tracking a man the size of a dump truck wasn't difficult, especially when he left a trail of warped chainlink fences and panicked alley cats in his wake. Frostbite leaped from a rusted fire escape to a slate roof, her boots leaving faint, crystalline footprints that evaporated seconds after she launched herself across the gap. Below her, Larry Pastel was tearing through the narrow backstreets, moving with a terrifying, locomotive momentum until he finally shoved his way through the rusted side door of an ostensibly abandoned auto body shop on the edge of the industrial district.

Pachino’s safe house.

Frostbite dropped lightly onto the corrugated tin roof, creeping toward a grime-caked skylight. Inside, the harsh glare of halogen work lights illuminated a half-dozen heavily armed enforcers. They were tense, gripping their weapons as Larry paced the center of the concrete floor, roaring about the police ambush.

She didn’t give them time to organize. Frostbite shattered the skylight, dropping into the garage like a falling star of pure winter.

She hit the ground in a crouch, instantly unleashing a volley of razor-sharp ice knives from her gauntlets. Two henchmen went down immediately, their weapons pinned to the wall by solid ice. A third raised a submachine gun, but Frostbite slammed her palms against the concrete floor. A jagged wave of frost surged outward, coating the man's boots and freezing his legs to the ground before he could pull the trigger.

For a fleeting moment, she had the upper hand. But then the heavy steel doors at the back of the shop slammed open, and a dozen more of Pachino’s men poured into the garage.

"Take her apart!" Larry bellowed, wiping a smear of blood from his cheek.

The air filled with the deafening crack of gunfire. Frostbite swept her arms up, conjuring a thick barricade of black ice just in time to catch the barrage of bullets. The shield cracked and splintered under the heavy fire. She was entirely surrounded, forced into a defensive corner as the mobsters laid down suppressive fire.

Then, the barricade exploded inward.

Larry didn't bother shooting; he simply charged like a rhino and shoulder-checked her ice wall into a thousand glittering shards. Frostbite lunged forward, twisting in mid-air to drive a concentrated blast of sub-zero energy directly into Larry’s chest. The ice coated his leather jacket, thick and heavy, but the brawler just grunted. With a terrifying display of brute strength, he flexed his massive shoulders, shattering the ice as if it were nothing but thin glass.

Before she could vault out of reach, Larry’s massive hand shot out, his thick fingers wrapping around her ankle. He swung her like a ragdoll, slamming her brutally against a hydraulic car lift.

The wind was knocked from her lungs in a sickening rush. Frostbite gasped, her vision swimming as she crumpled to the greasy floor. She tried to push herself up, but the sheer force of the impact had left her ribs screaming in agony. Larry loomed over her, cracking his cinder-block knuckles, while the rest of the armed goons closed the circle.

She was outgunned, completely out-muscled, and out of time.

Operating on pure survival instinct, Frostbite triggered the emergency release on her belt. A highly compressed cryogenic sphere dropped to the floor, detonating in a blinding, roaring flash of absolute zero. A thick, impenetrable blizzard of freezing fog instantly filled the garage, blinding Larry and sending the henchmen staggering backward as the temperature dropped thirty degrees in a single second.

Under the cover of the violent whiteout, Frostbite fired her grapple line blindly toward the shattered skylight. Her ribs flared with agonizing pain as the winch violently yanked her upward, pulling her out of the freezing chaos just as Larry’s massive fists smashed into the concrete where she had been lying a fraction of a second before. She collapsed onto the freezing tin roof, clutching her side, knowing she had barely escaped with her life.

Episode 1 | Training for Storm Valley

The scent of roasted oolong and damp stone hung thick behind the sliding bamboo screen of the Dragon’s Leaf tea shop. Inside the hidden dojo, stripped of the neon glare and sirens that choked the alleys of Storm Valley, the rhythmic thwack of canvas hitting palm was the only sound that mattered. Chris Faultly’s breath came in ragged, burning gasps. Sweat plastered to his forehead, but his dark eyes remained locked on the wooden dummy before him. He drove his palm forward, snapping his wrist at the final millisecond, just as Master Liu Fong had taught him three hundred times that afternoon. "Your anger is a heavy cloak, Chris," Liu Fong said, his voice like dry leaves scraping across flagstone. The old master didn't look up from where he was meticulously boiling water in a cast-iron kettle. "In Storm Valley, the Syndicate relies on your anger. They want you clumsy, predictable, and loud." "They burned my brother's shop, Master," Chris muttered...

Episode 4 | Not on my watch!

Chris Faultly, nightly known as Linx, stood like a sentinel on a rain-slicked rooftop, a figure composed of sharp angles and deeper shadows. His heavy, customized multi-purpose tactical chains and grappling system, complete with the intricate spinal chain spindle and reinforced Kevlar mesh from his suit design, coiled from his gauntlets like a metallic predator, a testament to the extensive custom engineering of his arsenal. His gaze was fixed on the city of Storm Valley, spread out below like a diseased lung, an acrid tang of exhaust and decay rising from its streets. Chris Faultly’s mind, inside the tac-suit, was elsewhere. The Pachino war... God, that was extreme,  he thought, remembering the firebombs and the coordinated, vicious assaults just a week ago. The city had felt like a tinderbox, and only the intense training with martial master Liu Fong had allowed him to emerge victorious. Liu Fong had been more than a teacher; he was a strategic genius, forcing Chris to see the ba...

Episode 3 | Cyborg Post has been kidnapped?

The rain over Storm Valley had barely subsided when a single, obsidian raven slammed its beak against the weathered sill of Christobal The Vision’s parlor window. Inside the dimly lit room, scented with burning sage and heavy incense, the wise fortune teller paused. He reached out, his fingertips brushing the cold, wet feathers, and untied a scrap of crimson-stained parchment bound to the bird's leg. The note was written in cursive by an anonymous hand:  The Flock leader has clipped wings. The Pachinos hold him where the salt meets the dead iron. Christobal’s breath hitched. His brother, Cyborg Post, had been taken. Without a word of hesitation, Christobal hurried to the Dragon’s Leaf tea shop, finding Master Liu Fong and Chris Faultly organizing the bruised and battered ninjas after the night's earlier skirmishes. Upon hearing the news, Chris’s fists clenched so hard his knuckles turned white.  Knowing they needed raw, unbridled muscle to crack a Pachino stronghold, Li...

Episode 5 | Up close with Miss Valentine

The second period bell had just rung, and the chaotic tide of high school students was receding into classrooms. Chris Faultly, vigilante by night, and mid-career History teacher known for his meticulous lesson plans and slightly rumpled corduroy jackets, was navigating the remaining foot traffic. He was absorbed in reviewing a stack of student essays on the French Revolution, his brow furrowed, which was a strategic error. Around the corner, near the trophy case, he collided with something” something warm and soft and scented like a summer garden. It was her . Miss Valentine. Valerie Valentine. The vibrant, effortlessly chic Art teacher who, quite frankly, rendered Chris’s extensive vocabulary utterly useless whenever she was nearby. "Oh! Oof!" Chris flinched as if he'd struck a sacred object. His stack of essays flew from his hands, a dozen voices of 16-year-olds on revolution fluttering down the tiled hallway like defeated confetti. His heart hammered a wild rhyth...

Episode 7 | Car thief’s and Spiders

The cold steel of Linx’s chains retracted with a sharp, metallic  clink , binding the unconscious car thief tight against a rusted lamppost. Rain slicked the asphalt of the abandoned dockyards, washing away the blood from the brief, brutal skirmish. Linx rolled his shoulders, the heavy links wrapped around his forearms clattering like iron thunder. It was supposed to be a routine night on patrol, just another petty crook looking to strip a stolen sedan for parts. Then the air pressure dropped, and the alleyway began to smell intensely of ozone and burnt copper. A swirling vortex of sickly violet light tore through the fabric of the night, expanding into a jagged portal directly above the stolen car. Linx unspooled his primary chain, the spiked weight at its end hitting the wet pavement. From the tearing rift emerged a nightmare: a spider the size of a transit bus, its bloated thorax pulsating with an intense, radioactive green luminescence. Eight compound eyes locked onto th...

Episode 6 | Frozen Funds

The purse snatcher didn’t even see the ice patch. One moment he was sprinting down a damp alley with a stolen leather clutch tucked under his arm, and the next, his boots lost all traction. He hit the asphalt hard, sliding ten feet before slamming into a dumpster. Before he could scramble to his knees, the temperature in the alley plummeted. Frostbite stepped out of the shadows, her breath pluming in the sudden cold. She didn't say a word. She just pinned the thief’s jacket to the pavement beneath her frost-rimed boot, plucked the clutch from his trembling fingers, and left him shivering. She tossed the purse back to the breathless civilian waiting at the mouth of the alley, grappling up to the fire escape before the thief even realized his shoelaces were frozen to the ground. Three blocks down, Frostbite crouched on the edge of a brick parapet. Her attention was drawn by the rare clink of coins sliding into a rusty payphone on the street corner below. It was Tony Pachino. The...

Episode 2 | Chaos follows the storm

The sky over Storm Valley split open, unleashing the kind of torrential, tropical downpour that could drown a neighborhood in minutes. Rain hammered the corrugated tin roofs of District 4, turning the narrow alleys into rushing brown streams. But the storm didn't deter the Pachinos. Taking advantage of the blackout and the deluge, armed squads of the city's most ruthless syndicate were fanning out, kicking in storefronts and shaking down merchants. They didn't expect the shadows to fight back. Chris Faultly dropped from a fire escape, his boots splashing into the flooded pavement as a Pachino enforcer swung a heavy lead pipe at his head. Ducking low beneath the arc, Chris drove a textbook wing chun palm strike straight into the thug's ribs, sending him crashing into a brick wall. Around him, the elite ninjas moved like phantoms through the sheets of rain, disarming gunmen and neutralizing lookouts with silent, surgical precision. Chris wiped the stinging rain from h...
